Mona Kowalska of A Détacher

A Détacher means to be detached, as in: to detach the label from the garment. A sentiment not only suggestive of the practicality of obtaining a piece of clothing and putting it to use, but also the values of the designer behind it who prefers for you to shop with intention and not buy things because of the label and its social association.

Artist Ana Kras visited Mona at her home, just before A Détacher showed a finale collection at New York Fashion Week. The ending of this chapter stems from Mona’s personal desire to step back and focus on other creative projects. We feel lucky to have caught Mona in a moment of change, a time where she is allowing her intuition to guide her.

Tracey Tawhiao (Ngai te Rangi, Whakatohea, Tuwharetoa) is more than an artist, she’s an ‘artivist’. She uses her work – penned, painted, collaged, performed, to beautifully transform negative language into positive, and tell the creation stories of Te Ao Māori using symbols drawn from Māori rock art. We talked to her about drawing strength from her ancestors, the earth and even the air.

You might recognise Mekdela Maskal from our beautiful recent campaign imagery. But modelling is just one part of the wide-ranging work this intelligent and generous-spirited woman does.

A trained journalist, she has worked with Open Newsrooms to help local communities understand and participate in the news process more effectively, and is the Engagement Editor for Covering Climate Now, which works to increase and improve climate change journalism. One aspect of her work that drew our particular interest is in the little-understood realm of food justice – or food apartheid, as it’s increasingly being called.

Welcomed into the private home of Elisabeth Vidal on her 52nd birthday says much about the French designer’s warmth and enthusiasm, even before we delve into her sublime catalogue of collaborative projects, including ceramics, furniture and interiors. With a focus on working with artisans throughout Italy, France, Portugal and Japan, Elisabeth’s research on the essential object finds its foundations in tactile apprehension and gestures.

Originally a graduate from the ESDI in Paris, Elisabeth has spent many years working and tutoring in Milan, living with her husband and two children. A few years ago, they moved back to Montpellier where Elisabeth grew up, and it is here, we meet and spend the morning speaking about personal maps and the importance of taking the time to live. Avid readers of the first issues of RUSSH will remember it’s progressive aesthetic and politically minded voice: celebrating youth, sex, curiosity and authenticity. But what readers were actually enjoying is the vision and voice of Stevie Dance, who led the magazine in its beginning years. She is credited as a stylist, but her insight penetrates deeper than that. Now living and working in New York + Los Angeles, Stevie is sharing creative direction and written essays for some of the industry’s most prominent titles & fashion houses, plus driving her sustainably-minded personal project, The Feel Studio Inc.

We visit Stevie at her LA home in her newest role as a mother to her beautiful son Harmony.
