How to soothe and heal sensitive skin

Is your skin constantly thirsty, itchy and inflamed? We talk to our founder Lucy Vincent on how to get some relief and get your skin barrier off to a good start.

Ask Lucy

"Eczema” and “dermatitis” (atopic conditions) are generic terms for “skin inflammation” and are often used interchangeably. They are caused by a person’s genetic inability to repair damage to the skin’s barrier function — the protective layer that prevents moisture leaching out and allergens entering in to trigger the immune system and spur on inflammation.

Dehydration is one of the biggest issues with atopic conditions. Dehydration causes irritation, and irritation spurs on inflammation.

The key to relief is to boost moisture levels within the skin, while working on repairing the skin's barrier function.

Extra care is required during the winter months because when it is dry and cold, water evaporates off of the surface faster and easier.

Here are some key tips for healthy soft skin:

DO

  • Work on rebuilding your skin's barrier function with key ingredients such as Niacinamide, Panthenol [Provitamin B5] and Hyaluronic Acid.

  • Swap bathing to night-time to avoid skin drying out during the day — be sure to apply a moisture in the morning to maintain hydration levels.

  • Keep moisture levels maintained in the skin as much as possible — dehydration causes irritation and irritation spurs on inflammation.

  • Apply a lipid rich emollient after bathing while skin is still saturated with moisture. Activator 7 is an excellent choice as it creates a hydrolipidic film to lock in moisture.

  • Use a gentle, pH balanced cleanser. We recommend Goji Body + Face Cleansing Oil as it is extremely gently without stripping the skin's natural sebum barrier.

  • Exfoliation is essential as it removes dry, dead skin that can exacerbate flare-ups and prevent penetration of key ingredients that, nourish, heal and soothe. The key to exfoliating sensitive skin conditions is to be gentle, avoid aggressive methods as this only spurs on inflammation. We highly recommend our Bio Active Body Exfoliant as it utilises ultra-fine, facial-grade bamboo, along with nourishing shea butter and coconut oil.

AVOID

  • Chemicals and irritants

  • Reduce the temperature of your shower

  • Don’t go outside (especially in winter) with wet skin

Extra tip:

Drinking extra glasses of warm water and having a humidifier in your house or office can make a huge difference to your skin in winter.
