Sans [ceuticals] | FAQ

Formulation Transparency

[without]

Sans [ceuticals] products do NOT contain the following: sulfates, parabens, silicones, PEG, petrochemicals, mineral oils, vinyls, phthalates, phenoxyethanol, synthetic fragrance, synthetic colours or bleaches, PPG, DEAS, TEA, aluminum/alumina.

[bioavailability]

Bioavailability is a term used to describe an ingredient’s ability to penetrate the epidermal layers of the skin to deliver vital nutrients and support to the dermis as this is where regeneration and activity happens.

It is a term used to describe how our cells recognise certain ingredients and therefore absorb and utilise them more readily making them highly effective in delivering results.

[testing + animal safety]

Sans [ceuticals] products and formulations are not tested on animals. Prototypes are rigorously tested on an array of cosmetologists, therapists, beauticians, and people in Lucy’s life, until the perfect formulation is created.

[pregnancy]

Sans [ceuticals] products are safe for use during pregnancy.

The concentration of retinyl palmitate in ACTIVATOR 7 BODY + HAIR + FACE OIL is formulated at safe levels, as set out by the FDA, and is much milder than that of oral retinoid medications. When applied topically, vitamin A applied is locked in the skin and therefore cannot be absorbed into the blood stream and is therefore safe for use during pregnancy.

We always recommend, if you still have any concerns, begin your daily applications from the second trimester onwards.

[preservative system]

After exhaustive research into the safest preservative systems available today, Sans [ceuticals] chose the following:

Dehydroacetic Acid + Benzyl Alcohol An Ecocert approved, multi-use, broad spectrum preservative system that is a synergistic blend of organic acid and alcohol. Meets COSMOS standards and is NATRUE Certified—NATRUE is a non-profit organisation that provides certification guaranteeing the ingredient is genuinely natural. NATRUE also guarantees the ingredient is Soil Association approved and not tested on animals.

Trisodium Ethylenediamine Disuccinate Winner of the UK Green Technology design award, this new generation preservative is fully biodegradable and a new, environmentally friendly alternative on the natural-care market. Scores a ‘low hazard’ 1 out of 10 on EWG's Skin Deep® Cosmetics Database—a US, non-profit, environmental organisation that specialises in research and advocacy in the areas of toxic chemicals.

Rosmarinus Officinalis [Rosemary] Leaf Extract This powerful herb has superior antioxidant strength, making it a favourite in the preservation of food and cosmetics. Rosemary extract is used to slow microbial growth on food and prevents oxidation of oils in skin care formulations.

Potassium Sorbate Discovered by the French in the 1850s and derived from the berries of the mountain ash tree, potassium sorbate is the potassium salt of sorbic acid. It is primarily used as a food preservative to inhibit moulds and yeasts in many foods, such as cheese, wine, yogurt, dried meats and apple cider.

[multifunctionality]

Our scientists believe there is no hierarchy when it comes to the skin on your face versus the skin on your body—it all requires the same calibre of ingredients and care.

We believe it is better to have fewer items in your bathroom that are used more frequently, ensuring potency and freshness. This approach reduces clutter while also being kinder on the wallet.

[hypoallergenic + sensitive skin]

Sans [ceuticals] is well suited to sensitive skin. In fact, many people with sensitive conditions benefit hugely from the key active ingredients such as vitamins A & E. Many common irritants and allergens [listed above] have been purposefully excluded from Sans [ceuticals] products, lessening the likelihood of a reaction or intolerance.

[coeliacs]

Certain products within the Sans [ceuticals] range contain wheat proteins. Leading Immunologist Dr. Vincent Crump, founder of the Auckland Allergy Clinic states the following:

I would not expect anyone with wheat/gluten intolerance, such as coeliacs, to have any reaction from wash-off products. For the very small percent of extreme allergic wheat individuals there could be a reaction to the skin but anaphylaxis would be very unlikely.

Most people with a wheat or gluten intolerance will have no problem whatsoever using products containing wheat extracts. However, those who have a severe allergy should perform a patch test before using the following products: Moisture and Protein Infusion 20, Nourishing Hair Wash, Nourishing Hair Hydratant, Balancing Hair Wash, Balancing Hair Hydratant, Volumising Hair Wash, and Volumising Hair Hydratant.

[beyond organic]

Potency, purity and origin of source are key to our formulations. At Sans [ceuticals], understanding the methods and practices of our suppliers is more important than a certified stamp [which can ultimately represent as little as 5 percent in a formulation]. Instead, using sound, clean science, we take highly active technologies and suspend them in a foundation of pure, natural and safe ingredients to ensure our products activate and optimise cellular health. We believe being organic is simply not enough—a pure + active approach is the future of modern skincare.

[natural fragrance]

Our natural fragrance [fragrance being a term required by EU regulations] is 100 percent ECOCERT and crafted in Grasse, France. Our precious botanicals are extracted using CO2 supercritical extraction. This is one of the cleanest and purest ways of obtaining extracts and actives, and eliminates the need for potentially harmful solvents like hexane—often used in the manufacturing of absolute and fragrance oils. Our natural fragrance will also produce a more active and spirited aroma than that derived from steam or heat distillation.

[vegan]

All Sans [ceuticals] products are vegan except for the Lip Aid and Baobab Regenerative Cream, which contain beeswax [cera alba].
