Kōanga, the Te Reo word for spring, is derived from the word kō, a traditional digging implement used to turn the soil.
We're taking this as our seasonal cue to research, get inspired, and do the hard work (mahi) to reap the future's harvest. Our circle of wahine suggests ways to unearth spring's most interesting ideas, from 00s romcoms to Choroi instruments, the treasures are abundant.
[01] READING —
'Room to Dream' by David Lynch and Kristine McKenna. I have always loved David Lynch's films and sinking into his life journey is incredibly interesting. Part memoir and part biography, it reveals the inner story behind his art.
Lia-Belle King, WORN, Melbourne
I’ve recently resubscribed to New York mag online and it’s taking me back to my time living there. I love reading Cathy Horyn’s fashion week reviews.
Maya Handley, Florets Bakery, Aotearoa
'The Sea Monkey' by Geraldine Kaye. I love getting second hand children's books. The illustrations, font, paper, stories. They don't make them so well these days!
Harry Were, Maker, Aotearoa
'Naag Mountain' by Manisha Anjali. Deeply moving, provoking and visionary poetry. Mashara Wachjudy, Artist, Melbourne
'Healing Guides Tarot: The Modern Book of Divination'. Adding another string to the spiritual bow by learning - slowly - to understand and read tarot.
Lucy Slight, FQ Beauty Editor, Aotearoa
'Drive Your Plow Over the Bones of the Dead' by Olga Tokarczuk. Olga is the queen of magical realism. I loved this one's strength and fearlessness.
Lucy McMillan, Artist, Aotearoa
[02] LISTENING —
Ascending by Clear Path Ensemble. I love starting the day with these textured, ambient explorations, it feels gentle and hypnotic. A bonus is the cover art by Jade Townsend, a match made in heaven.
Greta van der Star, Photographer, Aotearoa
I've been listening to Natural Information Society, it's my ideal studio buddy.
Lucy McMillan, Artist, Aotearoa
Sicu’s album ‘Grandma Loves You’ has also been something I’ve been listening to a lot after seeing Lisa perform the songs live. They make everything feel alive and true.
Mashara Wachjudy, Artist, Melbourne
'Peace At Last' by The Blue Nile, particularly track eight. It reminds me of Dev Hynes (or the other way around) and I love the rolling bassline and almost orchestral synth.
Aileen Chen, Photographer, Aotearoa
David Bowie narrating 'Peter and the Wolf'. It's my three year olds favourite.
Harry Were, Maker, Aotearoa
[03] COVETING —
Tigra Tigra beaded wrist bag.
Greta van der Star
Martin Parr's 'British Food' book (1995). His garish close up images of food are dizzying and brutally honest.
Aileen Chen, Photographer, Aotearoa
Beare Park's Crew neck long sleeve tee in black. It's classic, casual, and I'll wear it with a raw silk skirt.
Lia-Belle King, WORN, Melbourne
Star Gossage painting. I’ve only seen a few of her paintings in person but each time her images linger in my mind. They float like a dream in and out of focus. They don’t feel static which I love and they stay with me.
Maya Handley, Florets Bakery, Aotearoa
Japanese Anemone plants.
Ophelia Mikkelson Jones, Artist, Mangawhai
Phoebe Philo white ballet flats; I just need to psych myself up to pay for them!

[04] SEASONAL EXPERIENCE —
Planting tomatoes in the garden before it's too late, with basil alongside them, so that our girls can eat cherry toms straight from the vine all summer long and I can make fresh pesto.
Lucy Slight, Fashion Quarterly Beauty Editor, Aotearoa
Exposed skin to the sun and lettuce-wedge salads, and sleeping with the windows open.
Lia-Belle King, WORN, Melbourne
Writing letters and postcards with my son to friends, near and far, teaching him the joy of giving something and the surprise of getting a reply.
Greta van der Star, Photographer, Aotearoa
[05] WATCHING —
Primavera by Damiano Michieletto. A beautiful story set in 1700s Venice about Vivaldi and his student Cecilia. I also loved the cinematography, which looked almost entirely shot with natural light.
Maya Handley, Florets Bakery, Aotearoa
'Anna - And the Infinite Line,' a documentary about the life and work of artist Anna Maria Maiolino.
Lia-Belle King, WORN, Melbourne
'Trust the Man" a romcom from 2005. I'd watch it again for the shot of Maggie Gyllenhaal's character's office and Julianne Moore's hair.
Aileen Chen, Photographer, Aotearoa
Hacks. Very late to the party on Hacks, but I was in hook line and sinker within the first five minutes of episode one.
Lucy Slight, FQ Beauty Editor, Aotearoa
[05] OBJECT —
Choroi instruments. Beautifully made by makers and artists with disabilities. And! Something to keep as our children grow up.
Harry Were, Maker, Aotearoa
The limited edition teacups and saucers that Wedgwood and JW Anderson brought to life in honour of the potter Lucie Rie. In 1964, British ceramicist Lucie Rie designed teacups and saucers for Wedgwood that were never produced. She personally wrote a letter to Wedgwood, expressing her interest in collaborating. At the time, the Wedgwood designers felt it would not be possible to reproduce her work. Now, Wedgwood will finally reproduce these pieces for the first time. This exact jasper blue is my favourite colour and as a designer and writer, sipping from extremely specific teacups is part of my creative process.

I am pulled back time and time again to the work of Marc Camille Chamowicz. I'm currently mixing glazes for a ceramic work with his colours in mind.
