[01] COVETING —
The Trentasei one piece by Lido Swim
The wiser one gets, the more one realises that unfussy and elegant swimwear is worth investing in. We love this spaghetti-strapped one-piece as an elevated version of the classic.
Named after Janus — the god of transitions and all beginnings, January is a time when our sun expresses optimal energy, but that doesn't mean we have to... Our January mood board is inspired by gentle acts that slow us down, in honour of Ruhi the summer star that rests on our earth.
Our focus for January is to activate our senses with the sounds of Bollywood, the taste of homegrown tomatoes, and the aroma of natural beeswax. We navigate the practice of resolutions with a dollop of humility and humour. Because a fresh year demands bright rituals, but two-headed Janus will remind us to gather our momentum from opposing directions — a nod to both the future and the past.

[02] SEASONAL EXPERIENCE —
Eating a sun-warmed tomato picked straight off the vine.
Is there anything sweeter than a fresh cherry tom rubbed over melted butter on bread? Nope.
[03] OBJECT —
Beeswax candles by Hermon Blue
r
Handmade in the Eltham area, hemp wicks are dipped multiple times into beeswax creating a perfectly wonky finish. We love the drama of the half black and natural wax which makes for an interesting burn.
[04] READING —
The Beautiful Salmon by Joanna Kavenna
We came across this short in the Paris Review via a recommendation from author Ali Smith. A hilarious, and poetic, take on being someone's dinner guest.
[05] BOOK —
The Beginning by Tiny Barney
An intimate series of images of family and friends set within their domestic environments during the 1970s. The concept is about capturing slowness, being observational, with moments of energy that can only exist within a family dynamic. We don't know any of the subjects, however, there is a commonality available in her photographs that binds us to one another.
[06] TRAVEL —
Otama Beach
Slightly removed from the usual Coromandel escapes, north facing Otama Beach is located at the southern end of the Kūaotunu Peninsula, and part of a scenic reserve with large white sandy dunes, a tidal lagoon, and very few properties.
[07] DOCUMENTARY —
Witches by Elizabeth Sankey, 2024
Exploring the connections between postpartum mental health and the portrayal of witches in Western society & popular culture, director Elizabeth Sankey intertwines her personal experiences with historical and cinematic footage—while creating a new coven of women to reclaim their stories.
[08] MUSIC/ALBUM —
Mahal, Glass Beams
Glass Beams is the music project of Indian-Australian multi-instrumentalist and producer Rajan Silva. Their latest album Mahal captures Silva's memory of watching 'Concert For George' with his father, who moved from India to Melbourne in the late 70s. Weaving together strands of Bollywood and blues, it is a modern take on the fusion, pioneered by the likes of Ananda Shankar (seriously, listen to Ananda's take on Jumping Jack Flash!).
[09] MAKING —
Tomato Carpaccio
An easy, no-cook dish that is ready in 10 minutes and utilises that surplus of tomatoes brewing on the bench. Thinly slice ripe tomatoes, drizzle with olive oil and balsamic, then garnish with fresh basil and a pinch of sea salt.

[11] FILM —
The Brutalist
The latest from A24 starring Adrien Brody as the visionary architect László Toth. The character is a nod to the Hungarian-born Australian geologist who took a hammer to Michelangelo’s Pietà in 1972. That the hero would be named after this nutcase sounds like an inside joke, but it’s meant more seriously — a way of suggesting that a powerful creator is always, in some ways, a destroyer.
